My Dear Friends in Christ,
During the past few weeks, we have been carefully monitoring the health advisories and protocols issued by the Centers for Disease Control, the Southern Nevada Health District, and by Governor Steve Sisolak’s office regarding the measures needed to mitigate the Coronavirus.
In recent days, each agency has underscored the import and impact of “social distancing” as an indispensable element required to allay the impact of this global pandemic.
To that end, I have made the difficult but necessary decision to suspend the public celebration of Mass across the Diocese of Las Vegas, at least through the weekend of Palm Sunday (April 5, 2020) or until further notice. This includes the suspension of all Church services, parish meetings, and religious education classes, effective immediately.
As I stated in earlier correspondence, the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of the life of the Church and the Church’s most priceless treasure. The decision to suspend public celebration of Mass must be driven by grave and unprecedented circumstances and can never be taken lightly. These are the conditions in which we find ourselves today.
I ask that wherever possible, Pastors provide livestream access to the celebration of weekend Liturgy, and that as a Diocese, we pray in solidarity that this crisis will not only be abated, but also serve to draw everyone closer to the heart of Christ, the Divine Physician.
By pastoral necessity, I am allowing both funerals and scheduled weddings to take place, asking Pastors to help ensure gatherings during these key moments in the lives of the people be limited in size (preferably 250 people maximum) in order to protect the health and wellbeing of the assembly.
I am also giving Pastors the option of keeping their parish Churches open for reasonable hours each day so that individual parishioners will have the opportunity for private devotional prayer and Eucharistic Adoration. It is essential to remember the importance of our prayers for one another, our civic leaders, and health care providers at this time.
I have included with this communique a copy of a prayer which we can offer throughout our Diocese asking God’s blessings upon individuals and families already suffering from this disease, and special blessings upon health care providers as they minister to the sick and suffering in our community.
It is my fervent hope and prayer that these efforts, combined with your understanding and full cooperation, will aide in the reduction of this aggressive disease, and serve to alleviate its impact in our local community. Asking God’s abundant blessings upon each of you, I am

Durante las últimas semanas, hemos estado monitoreando cuidadosamente los avisos y protocolos de salud emitidos por los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades, el Distrito de Salud del Sur de Nevada y por la oficina del Gobernador Steve Sisolak con respecto a las medidas necesarias para mitigar el Coronavirus. En los últimos días, cada agencia ha subrayado la importancia y el impacto del "distanciamiento social" como un elemento indispensable requerido para mitigar el impacto de esta pandemia global. Por lo tanto, he tomado la difícil pero necesaria decisión de suspender la celebración pública de la Misa en toda la Diócesis de Las Vegas, al menos hasta el fin de semana del ‘domingo de ramos’ (5 abril 2020) o hasta nuevo aviso. Por necesidad pastoral, estoy permitiendo que se lleven a cabo tanto los funerales como las bodas programadas, pidiendo a los pastores que ayuden a asegurar que las reuniones durante estos momentos clave en la vida de estas personas tengan un tamaño limitado (preferiblemente un máximo de 250 personas) para proteger la salud y el bienestar de la asamblea. También les doy a los pastores la opción de mantener sus iglesias parroquiales abiertas durante horas razonables cada día para que los feligreses tengan la oportunidad de orar y devoción privada y adoración eucarística. Es esencial recordar la importancia de nuestras oraciones el uno por el otro, por nuestros líderes cívicos, y los proveedores médicos en este momento.
